From age 8 through present day I enjoy collecting my own rock and mineral specimens. The next step was learning lapidary skills; and then, needing a way to set these finished stones, I turned to traditional wire jewelry making. Over the years folks requested that I share my skills so I became an instructor, making several series of instructional DVDs, writing patterns for magazines and finally my first book ('Wirework'). I also enjoy being the education consultant for Wire-Sculpture, providing me with lots of student contact. Although I have a background in the fine arts and metal smithing, a combination of rocks, wire and students wins my heart!
What inspires you?
Oh my goodness--my inspiration comes from every 'where' and every 'thing'! I can be inspired by a piece of antique, cast jewelry or by bare trees on a rainy autumn day. Most of my inspiration comes from the materials I am work with, especially unusual cabochons. I often just place a bunch of materials on a white paper plate and begin 'playing'.
What is your greatest accomplishment as a jewelry designer?
As a 'designer' I am pleased with the way I have developed and mastered a wide variety of techniques using mainly square, half-hard wire; allowing me to create heirloom quality, wire jewelry designs resembling jewelry that is 'cast', but without using any type of solder or glue.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Actually I have two favorites. Coming up with a new (to me) technique that 'works' as I wish is very satisfying. However I really enjoy teaching my techniques. It is very gratifying to observe a student as they first grasp a concept, learn to execute techniques and then develop into a wire 'artist', often establishing their own successful business as a result. (My students inspire me-big time!)
