Bead Baubles and Jewels - Beading Lesson (806)

Can you change the size of memory wire?

Memory wire is tempered wire that "remembers" its shape and retains its coiled form. The best memory wire is made from stainless steel and is corrosion and tarnish resistant. It's basically one-size-fits-all and comes in pre-formed necklace, bracelet and ring sizes. You can use it to make designs with single or multiple loops.

Since memory wire is hardened to retain its shape, it isn't possible to bend the wire to alter the diameter of the loops. Make sure that you're starting out with the appropriate size, such as a large bracelet instead of a standard bracelet. Once you have the proper memory wire, there are several things you can do to change the way the memory wire fits.

Large, heavy beads can make the coil larger on memory wire, which is perfect for people who want a looser fit. When using large or heavy beads to make a bracelet or necklace, add extra loops so the bracelet will stay coiled around the arm or consider attaching a clasp to necklaces.

Memory wire rings are a bit tricky because the beads you use can cause the loop to expand and prevent the ring from fitting on your finger. Using smaller beads like seed beads will help the wire retain its original shape. Make sure that the beads aren't too tight on the wire, however, because this can force the loop to expand.

To make a bangle bracelet with memory wire, you can use Beadfixor epoxy to glue the wire ends inside opposite ends of a bead. Gluing the wire ends allows you to manipulate the size of the memory wire loop because you can make it smaller or larger as needed, and then glue it in place. This technique also works well for non-adjustable memory wire rings.

You can make a close-fitting cuff bracelet or choker by using multiple loops of memory wire and connecting them with spacer bars. This style is very comfortable to wear and allows you to wear a close-fitting bracelet without coiling it around your wrist.
