Leslie Rogalski

I love to play with materials and techniques, and to invent new designs. In every medium from seed beads to wire my construction style is about architecture and balance, symmetry and order. My passion for making jewelry is as much about the journey and the process. It's a meditative escape from the world as the end result. I can spend days on a single design or complete something satisfying in under an hour. Making wearable art is sheer joy for me, and I am happiest when I can ignite the same passion in others.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A JEWELRY DESIGNER?

I have heard from so many people who said they never wanted to work with seed beads until they saw some of my beadwork. That's success for me as a teacher as well as a designer. It means something inherent in my aesthetic resonates enough to get people thinking about the "what if?" and makes them want to explore on their own.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?

I have to say being part of this entire industry and global community has been life changing. And I don't like to call what I do work, because it's really about playing. I go into a zone and focus on shape, form, craft, surface, materials....so many "what ifs" to try. I know I will never run out of ideas. I am never bored.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWELRY MAKING TECHNIQUE?

I am an avid bead weaver, for sure, but I stitch with many types of beads along with seed beads. I began with seed beads but I am definitely in a constant state of evolution as I learn new techniques. To bring my new ideas to life I do not have limits. I am currently building my wire-working skills.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE JEWELRY?

I'm definitely attracted to tribal talismanic bits and pieces as well as industrial, hardware ephemera. Bringing the two together is very much a part of me- past meets the future. I love the texture of elements that look unearthed, but also the matte rubber, plastic and metallic finishes of machined components. My palette is specific. I work only with the colors that float my boat, but I have a great admiration for artists with a more adventurous color path.
